The Art of Slowing Down: Why We All Need a Little More Calm
There is often something else to finish. Making room for yourself can begin before the list is complete.
You sit down with a warm drink, then remember the washing. Pick up your phone to check one message and find yourself answering five. Even the quieter parts of the day can become filled with small jobs.
When life feels like this, slowing down can sound like another thing to organise. A morning routine to perfect. A whole evening to keep free. Something you will get around to when everything else settles.
But a slower moment can be much smaller.
Let one thing have your attention
Try drinking your tea while it is still warm. Notice the fragrance, the weight of the cup and the view from where you are sitting.
You might choose to listen to a favourite song without scrolling, or take a shower without mentally planning tomorrow. There is no particular result to achieve. You are simply allowing yourself to be where you are for a few minutes.
Give the evening a beginning
Working days have a way of spilling into personal time, especially when the laptop lives at home.
A small, familiar action can help you mark the change: clear the table, change into comfortable clothes or turn on a softer lamp. Perhaps you enjoy a candle or a favourite room fragrance while you settle in.
Choose something that feels welcoming and easy to repeat.
Leave a little unfinished
Some evenings, the washing can wait until morning. Some messages can be answered tomorrow.
Start with one ordinary moment this week and give it a little more space. You may find that the day feels different when you allow yourself to enjoy part of it.
A moment to consider: What is one thing you would enjoy more if you stopped rushing through it?
